10 Myths People Get Wrong About Gig Harbor

by Lindsay Jackman

Which Myth Have You Had To Bust Lately?

1. Gig Harbor is only for boaters

People often think you need a boat to fully enjoy Gig Harbor. While boating is part of our culture, the truth is you can soak up the Harbor lifestyle without ever stepping foot on a dock. From trails and parks to boutiques, art, food, and community events, there’s so much more to Gig Harbor than the marina.

2. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge toll is both ways

Visitors are always shocked to learn that you only pay the toll heading eastbound into Tacoma. Crossing back into Gig Harbor is free.

3. All the best views require waterfront property

Not true. Some of the most stunning views are from the ridges and hillsides above town where you can see sweeping panoramas of the Sound, Mount Rainier, and the bridge.

4. Gig Harbor shuts down after summer

Fall and winter bring just as much beauty and activity. Locals know the crisp air, cozy restaurants, and holiday lights make the Harbor magical year-round.

5. You need to take a ferry to get here

Gig Harbor feels like an island getaway, but you can drive right over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. No ferry tickets required.

6. Living here means a long commute to Tacoma or Seattle

Many residents are surprised at how quick the drive is to Tacoma, and with hybrid work, the Seattle commute is easier to manage than ever.

7. All of Gig Harbor is expensive luxury living

Yes, we have incredible luxury homes, but there are also neighborhoods with starter homes, condos, and townhomes that make living in the Harbor more attainable than people think.

8. There is nothing to do here except look at boats

Sure, the marina is gorgeous, but locals know the Harbor is full of hiking trails, art galleries, festivals, farmers markets, breweries, and live music.

9. Downtown is the only place worth visiting

The waterfront is amazing, but you will find hidden gems in Uptown, Fox Island, Key Peninsula, and throughout the surrounding communities.

10. Everyone in Gig Harbor is retired

While many retirees do call Gig Harbor home, there is also a growing community of young families, professionals, and entrepreneurs who love raising their kids in this small-town atmosphere.
